Kamowa Airstrip Saga Security Lapse-Mpombo People’s Democratic Party President George Mpombo says the late discovery of the privately owned Kamowa Airstrip in Luangwa District of Eastern Province by government confirms serious security lapses in the country. On Wednesday Defence Minister Edgar Lungu said government was repossessing the Kamowa Airstrip that was operated by Yexley Zambia Limited believed to be under the control of a Mozambican national. This comes a month after Lungu had told the nation that he was shocked that there was an airstrip in Luangwa District without government aware of its existence. Mpombo said it was shocking that the matter had only surfaced now with the security wings of government fully operational and drawing a huge unaudited budget. “This development is a confirmation of serious security lapses. It should not have been the case with our security wings in operation,” he said. “It means we should sit up as a country, you do not give foreigners land in sensitive areas. This is very embarrassing to our government who should have been on top of things.” The former Defence Minister added: “Maybe this is why a senior government official was saying wildlife was being airlifted out of the country without government knowledge.” zambiareports/2014/05/08/kamowa-airstrip-saga-security-lapse-mpombo/
