Kaplans analysis is not the conventional wisdom, hes more accurate. On the issue of the terrible micro-management of Defense by the White House....let me just say that all those Washington talking heads who are worked up about this have absolutely no historical frame of reference. This White House and NSC are NOT micro-managing to a unique degree. I say that as one who worked in the White House/NSC under three different presidents. And how terrible is it that the Commander-in-Chief and his immediate staff micro-manage the Defense Department? or national security in general? No one was ever elected to the post of Secretary of Defense. The president is the elected official and it is he who is blamed when there are national security failures. He and his immediate staff must steer the ship. If he were not doing that, then you would have real grounds to complain. But dont complain when he is doing his job.
