Keep an eye out for the July Castle Rock Brewery wildlife beer. Skylark (4.6% ABV) is described as a refreshing wheat beer; naturally cloudy with an authentic German aroma: castlerockbrewery.co.uk/beer/skylark/#sthash.scXOJdKK.dpuf The skylark is a small and unremarkable looking bird, but has been described as the ‘voice of spring’. Smaller than a starling but larger than a sparrow, these delightful birds are well known for their display flight which seems them soar vertically in the air. Sadly due to dramatic population declines in recent years the Skylark is listed as a species of conservation concern. Over the past 18 months Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust has been raising funds to extend its Skylarks Nature Reserve. skylarksappeal.co.uk Many people think that the reserve takes its name from the bird – but the site is actually named after a respite care centre which was built at the top of Adbolton Lane. The reserve was created for use by guests staying at the centre and is believed to have been the first nature reserve specifically designed to be wheelchair accessible. Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust now expects to be able to purchase land adjacent to the Skylarks Reserve to extend it and plans to restore many of the original paths and work with site users to make it more accessible to a range of user groups. On Saturday there will be an opportunity to explore Blotts Pit, the proposed extension. Meet at 10.30am. Booking essential. Contact: Ruth Testa 0115 958 8242, [email protected]. The beer was previously available in July 2007 and (along with the 11 other wildlife beers for this year) it was chosen by drinkers from the 144 different wildlife beers in a vote last summer. Since 2001, the lovely people at Castle Rock brewery have brewed a monthly ‘Natural Selection’ beer with names chosen to highlight flora or fauna under threat. The beers help promote Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust’s work and have raised more than £120,000.
