Kia ora ano whanau, these are the words in an email I recieved from (Malema) Dolly Baker who is Ngati Hines wananga co-ordinator as well as one of our representatives for Matawaia Marae - It gives me great pleasure to announce that Te Wananga o Awanuiarangi has sent through confirmation of funding to the amount of $18,720.20 for the Te Reo Maori Wananga held in conjunction with Otiria Marae earlier this year. Kia ora koutou We were fully funded for all 35 Matawaia students, and I would like to take this time to acknowledge our Kaiako; Maxwell (Larty) Sinclair, Koha Aperahama, Tau Kaka, Moe Milne, Sonny Livingstone, Tukaha Milne and of course all our kaitautoko - Waihoroi Shortland, Andrenah Kaka, Hira Kopa, Mate Henare (Shortland), Piri Kopa, and Astor Toia. Your passion for Te Reo Maori and its continuation was evident in the ways that you delivered your activities. Although this was just a glimpse of the beauty of Te Reo Maori, it was enough to entice us to go further, try harder and have a go no matter what. The key was always to maintain a safe supportive learning environment and we were not disappointed. For agreeing to share your knowledge and start us on our journeys we are truly grateful. Id like to also acknowledge our roopu of amazing ringa atawhai for both marae. Those who fed our bodies when our minds were almost full to bursting. Without your constant love, care and attention our wananga journey would have been that much more difficult. Thank you to our Otiria cooks led by Nanna Em and Nanny Junie. Thank you to our Matawaia cooks led by Ellen. Cilla and Astor. A special mention to Mahina Reihana, Koko Hancy and the fantastic roopu tautoko who helped put together our amazing Hakari at the final wananga. It is still the topic of great discussion even now. Thank you all. To our Wananga Moderators Uncle Haki Cherrington and Darlia Walker, whose responsibilities included signing off on all assessments, thank you. Thank you for agreeing to moderate on behalf of our two maraes, particularly when it was so difficult to find moderators that met the eligibility criteria set by Te wananga o Awanuiarangi. To Franky Toeke, our new Regional Coordinator, who was so fantastic at making sure we had all the documentation and reporting papers needed to deliver an incredible wananga to our students. Nga miki ki a koe.. Considering this is your first year in this role you have done brilliantly. Of course, all of this would not have been possible without the attendance and commitment of all our akonga. So, to all of the people who committed 5 weekends to attend these wananga on behalf of your marae, who braved cold weather, long distance travel, illness and work: NGA MIHI MAIOHA KI A KOUTOU NGA WHANAU O OTIRIA ME MATAWAIA MARAE. MAURI ORA KI A TATOU KATOA.
