Korean freighter MGM No.5 sank after explosion in East China Sea, 1 crew missing Category :- Accidents Author :- Editorial Posted on July 13, 2013, 9:55 pm Korean general cargo vessel MGM No.5 suffered an explosion in cargo hold in the afternoon July 12 13 (reportedly around 17:00 LT) and sank soon after the explosion in East China Sea, some 40 nm off Namhae Island, Korea. Nearby Russian boxship FESCO Diomid immediately came to assist and rescued 9 crew, 1 crew went missing. Rescued, all in good health, were picked up later by helicopter and transported to Korea, FESCO Diomid resumed voyage Shanghai – Vostochniy. 10 crew included 2 South Koreans (Captain and Chief Engineer), 3 Indonesians and 5 Myanmar. 1 missing crew is Indonesian. MGM No.5 was en route from Incheon Korea to Wakayama Japan, with reportedly, cargo of metallic powder, which may explain the cause of the explosion.
