L1: The first lumbar vertebra is remarkable in that it, well, - TopicsExpress

L1: The first lumbar vertebra is remarkable in that it, well, doesn’t have a rib associated with it. The shape of L1 is very similar to the 12th thoracic above it, so much so it’s difficult to tell apart from it. Anatomists call the first lumbar the border between the thoracic spine and the lumbar spine, but bio mechanists recognize the changes in motion from higher than that. (Well cover that in the next couple posts) The dermatome for the L1 is “The “Speedo”, affectionately called “the loin”, which is what the word lumbar means in Latin, anyway. Traditionally, chiropractors relate the L1 to the large intestines, and adjusting this region can help with various digestive complaints. Ooo! Tangent time! There is something genuinely rewarding about seeing a problem on a person’s xrays, and relating that to an organic problem… that’s why dermatomes are really “cool” from a diagnosing point of view. The ability to diagnose is much more fun than looking directly at an MRI, and much cheaper, to boot.
