LA Weekly calls Vin Scully Overrated!!? 50 mins ago by Chris Flick You all know that we LOVE Vin Scully like he is family. Because he feels like that. We have posted his top 5 calls, his heart-warmed reception on bobble-head night, him reminiscing on his career, and many many other posts. Just search his name in our Headline section. So naturally, I am troubled by what I read today… If you do not know who Hillel Aron is, you should. While I hesitate to use his name because I want to give him zero publicity, I do want to create some negative notoriety around him because he has made a grave error in his report on the 12 Most Overrated Things in LA There is a link to his “author page” at LA Weekly above if you click his name. You will probably want to shoot him an email after you read this… Here is what I am talking about – verbatim from LA WEEKLY on Monday. The #2 Most Overrated thing in LA… 2) Vin Scully The L.A. Times channeled what many Angelenos truly believe when it called Vin Scully “the Voice of L.A.” I don’t care if he is the best in the business, or if he’s been doing it since the Crimean War. The man talks. During a sporting event. That lasts for three and a half hours and includes only 18 minutes of action. Scully’s voice, however charming, is still only slightly more captivating than the sound of a broken humidifier. If he’s the voice of the city, the city needs to read more. To begin, the amount of arrogance one must posses to think they are remotely qualified, or knowledgeable enough, to even create a list like this is beyond my comprehension. But what do I know? I am not a pretentious columnist for LA Weekly… This misguided, foolish and confused… wait those words are not strong enough. This guy is ignorant and out of touch. I can only assume that he is an LA transplant, and was probably bullied as a child. Sad, really. Vin Scully does far more than simply talk – he draws you in. He paints a picture with his words, but more-so, he incites emotion – not for the entire game, of course. And that is what makes him all the more special. His timing is impeccable. As the author says, he talks – rather, informs us – for 3+ hours, a feat unto itself. He knows the players better than they know themselves. And we all realize that he will repeat a story from time to time (every series) but unlike all of us, some people are more casual fans. They might not realize that Ugla mean Owl in Sweedish – and that is important stuff! Through his repetition, he can reach a wider audience with his wisdom. But what truly mystifies me about this ridiculous article is the last statement… “Scully’s voice, however charming, is still only slightly more captivating than the sound of a broken humidifier. If he’s the voice of the city, the city needs to read more.” Scully’s voice is literally Golden… you can trade it on the NYSE. Charming is a bold understatement. And humidifier?? Seriously, WTF is this guy thinking? Vin Scully is not the Voice of LA? Who does the author prefer? Mark and Brian? Rick Dees? Big Boy? (sorry if I am out of touch, but have not live in LA for almost 10 years…) If you do not believe he is the Voice of LA, Hillel Aron, than I beg you… do all of Los Angeles a favor and move to Arizona and disrespect Dback fans. (I would say SF, but I live up here so…) You are not fit to continue your job and have disrespected literally millions of people with your ignorant statement – it feels as if you have talked shit about my Grandpa. And I am not happy about it.
