LEADERSHIP CHALLENGES .....POLICE & CRIME ????? For sometime now ,the rise of murder and senseless killing has being amongst us.So much so these tragic incidents almost seem normal This cannot be accepted,as we are too small a nation to withstand this kind of onslaught No effort must be spared to rid our society of this invasive element to what is otherwise a civil and peaceful people Having said that, some five years ago,the then PM Hubert Ingraham sought to arrest what was then becoming a trend in rise of murder ,by changing the leadership of the Police Force A forceful, disciplinarian and perhaps old method policing in the person of former COP Reginald Ferguson was replaced by a young, bright, energetic, skillful communicator, tech savy, charismatic, people driven ,visionary leader in the person of Ellison Greenslade We all remember the exchange of the sword, PM referred to that as the changing of the guard, the emergence of a new generation of leadership The goodwill of the BAHAMIAN people was unreserved, excitement was enormous....we wanted this change to translate into meaningful transformation in our communities so far as crime was concern Commissioner Greenslade would be our savior Five years later, the one metric by which leadership is measured still face us today Murder has not decreased, perhaps we are even more fearful, people do not feel safe, confidence in the leadership of the police has not improved and in some instance, their credibility damaged ( handling of the number houses, restructuring of crime statistics, open conflict with PSA ) etc A new generation of leadership as hoped by former PM Ingraham did not translate into wholesale systematic changes within the police force The same old same old,was allowed to be the order of the day...internal mistrust at the highest levels, political blue eye boys and political appointments allowed to second guess the leadership of the force, promotions still at the desk of some political figures, rather than at the core of the force leadership Where generational leadership is not followed through with new paradigm and tools for that age, then the results remains the same or in many case becomes worst, because in addition to the rise in crime, morality and frustration within the organization set in Five years later and hundreds of promotions, the one metric still haunts us...no amount of gerrymandering of the statistics will change what we feel...A Nation that is loosing the war in crime The question for the now PM ,will he have to do again what his predecessor felt he had to do....Bring in new leadership in hope of shaking up things For PM Ingraham, he had a bench,he had the luxury of Greenslade, Dames,Hannna and much more law studied guys to whom he can turn If leadership change is necessary, to whom will this PM turn, who is on the bench that can come in, not just as new generation of leadership ,but who can bring resolved to wholesale systematic change, confidence in his or her leadership ,that others are allowed to function unimpeded Who sits on the bench that has only one resolved, return our communities to a safe place Who is on the bench that respects political leadership but does not seek to patronize politicians at the expense of doing their job This PM is at the same place his predecessor was some five years ago..In hindsight,as questionable as it was constitutionally ,maybe five years contracts was the one was we say to the holder of the office, why should we invite you to continue without end
