LEARNING THE WORD (Sep 14, Exaltation of the Holy Cross - Nm 21:4b–9) In order to recover from the deadly snake bites, the Israelites in the desert have to look at the bronze serpent mounted on a pole. This story shows the deep mystery of the cross: how the cause of death becomes the source of life, how poison is used as antidote, how the symbol of punishment and shame is transformed into the sign of salvation and glory. The cross, however, has meaning only because Christ embraced it out of love and obedience to the Father and to humankind. When we avoid the Israelites attitude of grumbling, groaning and griping, but embrace with faith and love our crosses of sufferings, failures and weaknesses, then we can hope to share in Christs victory and glory. I LEARN that instead of asking God to remove my sufferings and weaknesses, I am challenged to be patient and be filled with hope that Gods glory is best served through the power of the cross.
