LEGENDARY LICKS: - The violent, viral video that was posted by a mother attempting to discipline her daughter seems to have elicited two types of responses that are emotional, extreme and at opposite ends of the spectrum. Firstly, there has been an over-glorification of brutal and sadistic corporal punishment as the way forward. Secondly, there is a call from our Prime Minister to seek legislation to ban corporal punishment in the home. (I very much doubt that the attempt to enact a law to ban corporal punishment in the home will ever find credence in our Republic.) The glorification of “licks” on the other hand presents more of a problem. Many in our society tell legendary anecdotes of the legendary beatings they received at the hands of irate parents. And that these belt-wielding; pot-throwing; frying pan-swinging; hit-yuh-with-whatever-ah-put-meh-hand-on beatings, have set them straight for life. Little do we realize that this specter of abuse springs from a mentality that lets the horse bolt and then tries to kill the horse with licks to bring it back. In other words, proper parenting begins when the infant is born and if proper values and principles are not skillfully instilled within the first six to seven years, there will be problems. Many parents through ineptitude produce little ‘monsters’ and when these little ‘monsters’ come of age and start to act out… then it’s time to ‘blaze’ them back into compliance and to ‘make a jail’ to see my child go straight. I believe in corporal punishment and in using the rod of correction. Let’s be mindful that the Bible says the rod of “correction” and not the rod of “abuse.” The viral video unveils a dysfunctional mother abusing a dysfunctional child in a dysfunctional home. Dysfunction which, most likely, started more than a decade earlier and which six minutes of incessant profanity and prolonged brutality in the full glare of the national community will not easily undo. The solution lies not in “Legendary Licks” or “No Licks at all” but in the revisitation and restoration of the Family through education and impartation. (Please note that the term ‘monsters’ in the body of this article, is in quotation marks and is analogical language.)
