LESSONS LEARNED: The Forestry Source, a publication of the Society of American Foresters, this month has an article "Lessons from Escaped Prescribed Fires: A Review of 2012 Incidents". The article is based on iirdh.wildfirelessons.net/main/Reviews.aspx. Available from the Wildnnad Fire Lessons Learned Center. The article addresses escaped fire incidents that occurred on federal agency burns during 2012. Interesting reading. Some aspects might be applicable to prescribed burning in the private sector. Everyone who plans and conducts burns would benefit from reviewing this material. We have no such data from in state private sector burns. Part of the reason is for concerns in the private sector over liability. That is a shame. We could all learn from "what happened, why, and possibly how to prevent a re-occurrence". The article only deals with escape and does not include smoke related incidents. Smoke is a major issue and should be included. Lessons Learned might be a subject area for the prescribed fire councils or maybe the coalition.
