Wayne Pacelle Debi: We appreciate your concern for the welfare of the animals at the Olymic Animal Sanctuary. We are aware that KOMO 4 News in Seattle, WA ran a report about OAS on September 23, 2013, which highlighted the concerns you are expressing. We share many of the same concerns. However, local enforcement agencies operate as independent entities, and The HSUS does not have any jurisdiction over shelters or rescues. When our Animal Rescue Team assists with a case, it is because local agencies have requested our aid. We have been in communication with the City of Forks for many months, but ultimately we have no law enforcement authority. We have shared the concerns from our members, and continue to do so. As we understand it, in order to take any sort of action at this point, law enforcement in this jurisdiction needs current, firsthand information about the status of the animals. Should you have access to this information (i.e. conditions that you have witnessed), I would urge you to reach out directly to the Forks Police Department at (360) 374-2223. Once you have filed your complaint with law enforcement, please contact [email protected]. We remain committed to the welfare of the animals at OAS as well as other national non-profits who we have been in communication with regarding this situation.
