LIBERTY HIGH PARENTS: I could use a little input on some concerns I am feeling about this situation that has occurred at our kids school. Because of the work I do, and because the victim in this situation has been a longtime friend of my daughters, Id appreciate some outside perspective. First, Im disturbed that the media would print the details of this situation that obviously came from the victim. Maddie has told me that all the school has read this story. Im concerned about the impact on the kids (my daughter, included) that are not only closest to this case (friends of the victim, were in the classroom with this teacher while he was doing some of these things). My thought is that the school really should be providing counseling to the students. Ive talked to several students close to this case who have really struggled with what to do with all of this. Im concerned (but not shocked) that this teacher had the history of behavior that he did, and yet it it took STUDENTS in the building to raise voices of concerns to the school administration to get something done about it. Im sorry, but what the H.E. double hockey sticks. Seriously. Lastly, Maddie has told me that this teacher showed movies every day in class, for I dont know how long. Maddies getting a lower than is typical for her grade in this class. When I talked to her about it, she said that she refused to do the assignments (answer questions about the movies), because she thought it was stupid that all they were doing was watching movies everyday. Im not wanting to excuse her little attitude, but Im less than happy that this teacher wasnt teaching, but showing videos to the class while he was victimizing the student at his desk. Thinking I need to make an appointment with the school principal. :(
