LIFE ON OUR NUT FARM – WHIDBEY NIGHT LIFE A blissfully quiet day here on Our Nut Farm, I am working on a big project. Michael, was extremely busy this weekend, he always comes home with the most interesting stories. His last call the other night was an elderly woman that had a large bat in her house. She was terrified, called 911. Michael responded, and sure enough, there was a large bat flying around in her living room! Luckily, a fishing net and stepladder were in the garage. Eventually, Michael caught the bat in the net, in midair and relished it back outside. Another satisfied customer, she was grateful! Michael departed happy to have been of assistance. This reminds me of our bat story! We had just moved in to this house, here on Whidbey, Michael living at the Police Academy, Alexander in Kindergarten. Our home a remodel nightmare, then three-year-old Adrienne and I spent as much time outside during that first early fall. Her little art table on the front porch, we had tea and played there as well. I remember looking up and seeing something dark hanging in the corner above our heads…It was a BAT! The first one I had ever seen! Luckily, I knew the home phone number of a deputy, and called him to come remove the bat! He put it in a bucket. Then he released it into the one of the three trees on our property, way out in the field. Sure enough, next day that bat was back! I called again, this time he took it further away! Back to the present, afternoon break, the Puppy Girls and I walked around our Hazelnut orchard. Dachshund’s are scent hounds and the sister trio love the smells in the fields! Especially exuberant when little critters jumped up and scurried passed us, the three leashes straining! BTW, the Little Ladies Love Turkish Hazelnuts and that is another story!
