LIVE MUSIC SHOWCASE TONITE AT DOUG FIR, 830 E. BURNSIDE! Monthly Live Music Showcase Highlighting Local Artists on the Rise to Take Place February 4 at Doug Fir Lounge [Portland, OR – Jan. 16, 2014] – Red Bull Sound Select, an ongoing program to support local music scenes and the people who push them forward, announces the latest installment of Red Bull Sound Select Presents: Portland on Tuesday, February 4 at the Doug Fir Lounge. The showcase features headliner Helio Sequence and local artists Genders and Modern Kin. The show is 21+ and tickets are $3 for those who RSVP before February 4 at win.gs/KtwT4h and $12 at the door without an RSVP, with all proceeds going back to support the opening local bands. The event series, created in partnership with Portland curators Banana Stand Media, PDX Pop Now!, and Portugal. The Man, features one headliner and two local artists on the rise. This months show was curated by Banana Stand Media. Throughout the year, the showcase will visit different career-launching Portland venues and will introduce an exciting line-up of artists local to the Pacific Northwest. LOCALS ONLY Portland four-piece Genders became Rose City favorites even before releasing their debut full-length, Get Lost, in December. Opening for Built to Spill on a national tour was a dream come true for the band, which was named one of Portland’s Best New Bands of 2013 by Willamette Week. Genders ambitious tunes defy genre classifications, combining minor key, lo-fi guitars and complex rhythms with singer Maggie Morris warm, captivating vocals. Modern Kin’s sweeping 12-song debut begins with singer Drew Grow’s ardent wail, and expands into heady and tilted harmonies that scrape around rowdy guitars. These songs push forward and take up space, celebrating the primitive thrill of being loud when you are expected to be quiet. Rising from the ashes of renowned Portland band Drew Grow & the Pastors Wives, Modern Kin – now a three-piece – has already amassed a passionate fanbase and collaborated with the likes of Sleater-Kinneys Janet Weiss, who produced their debut self-titled album, as well as renowned Flaming Lips producer Dave Fridmann. Helio Sequences sweeping melodies and shimmering, reverb-heavy songs transport listeners to another plane. The Portland duo comprising singer-guitarist Brandon Summers and drummer-keyboardist Benjamin Weikel released their latest album, Negotiations, on Sub Pop Records, which received more than its fair share of critical acclaim. After overcoming challenges including a flood that destroyed their studio and Summers vocal chord troubles, the band has reinvented themselves with newfound confidence and clarity. Red Bull Sound Select Presents: Portland is curated by three of the citys most influential tastemakers in the industry, who serve as the A&R, ambassadors, promoters and eyes and ears behind the series – Banana Stand Media , PDX Pop Now! and Portugal. The Man. Banana Stand Media is a record label and secret recording space in Southeast Portland. It is best known for the Live from the Banana Stand series, which documents the live work of independent artists in the Pacific Northwest. PDX Pop Now! is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to stimulating and expanding participation in Portland music and providing support for live performances and recorded materials. Renowned Portland-based band Portugal. The Man knows a thing or two about great music.
