LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF MY SISTER, Karen Mays Bourland: As many of you know, Karen composes these poignant anecdotes from her classroom and I’ve decided to join the fray. It happened quickly. In the midst of a scintillating lecture on rhetorical strategies, a male student in my 3rd hour class put his head on his desk apparently to take a nap. After slapping my hand loudly on his desk I said, “If you are going to sleep, please go out in the hallway.” Bleary-eyed he watched as I continued the wonderful discourse.
