LOCAL Film maker, Mingeli Palata says if Zambians let piracy rob the artists and government of taxes, the country’s film industry will continue struggling. Speaking to Sun FM News this morning, Palata - the producer behind “Foolish Me, The Beautiful Lie and Maliposa,” said he is disappointed as an artist with the reluctance by Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and the Zambia Police Anti-Piracy Squad for not taking action to sweep the streets of pirated merchandise. Mr. Palata said arts will not grow to higher levels as long and piracy exists and that there is need for government to totally address the vice and ensure it comes to an end in order for the originators and artists to enjoy their fruits. He added that the introduction of the hologram was meant to curb piracy and improve investment in the sector and not to punish businessmen and women adding that originators need to reap benefits from their efforts as a way of improving and sustaining themselves. On February 28th 2013 the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Services in partnership with the Ministry of Tourism and Arts launched the hologram which is a security feature to be affixed on all genuine CDs, DVDs and other such media to distinguish original audio and visual products from pirated ones. The Holograms were received at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by the then Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary, Amos Mulupenga who was flanked by Zambian artists.
