LOCAL NEWS THE Sacred Heart boxing tournament on Friday evening was truly a night to remember with the big crowd that packed into Bellinis getting full value for their money. On the bill were 21 closely-fought contests and indeed many of those bouts ended in split decisions. Sky TV commentator Harry McGavock, MC for the evening, told the crowd that it was one of the best nights boxing Ive ever seen. The tournament began at 7.30pm and continued until well past midnight. Many young boxers stepped into the ring for the first time and they really enjoyed themselves as did the crowd. While at the other end of the spectrum All Ireland champion Conor Wallace produced a master-class of style, skill and footwork, in the process landing some sizzling right and left hands on his gritty rival Noel Sommers from Palmerstown, Dublin. Silverbridge lad Sean Garvey won the Best Home Boxer award while Kenneth Doyle who had a real ding-dong with the Sacred Hearts Shane McClorey, in one of the tightest contests of the evening, won the Best Visiting Boxer award. Sacred Heart supremo Seamus McCormick, who organised the show along with Owen Murphy and other members of the club, told the Democrat: It was an excellent show and a good advert for boxing in the town of Newry. Darren Hanna (Sacred Heart) defeated Paul Toner (OHanlon Park) 3-0. Brendan Hollywood (Sacred Heart) defeated John Ward (OHanlon Park) when the referee stopped the contest in round one. Cian Campbell (Sacred Heart) beat Sean Clelland (OHanlon Park) 2-1. Nathan Brannigan (Sacred Heart) lost 2-1 to Christopher Ward (OHanlon Park). Chloe Kennedy (Docklands) lost 2-1 to Sara Edris (Monkstown). Kyle Mooney (Sacred Heart) defeated Ryan Chengle (Docklands) when the referee stopped the contest in round one. Dylan McNally defeated Dylan Rowe (Monkstown 2-1. Guy Wallace (Sacred Heart) fought a no-decision contest against Thomas Carthy (Monkstown).
