LONELINESS OF BEING Alone I breathe in the stale sounds of my being Painted in gray luminous shades of loneliness Reflected against a canvas of sheet and wall Shadows stretching from out of dark corners Freely merging from memories half forgotten Filtered lights and muted sounds pronouncing The constant decaying of the anatomy of time Tick I am old, tick I am tired, tick I have passed At the foot of my bed stand the old centurions My trusted night watchmen wait in anticipation Names like Mr. Grief, Mr. Loss and Mr. Regret Guard my nightly citadel and lead my thoughts They openly challenging my attempts to forget By stirring my mind with their endless whispers Am I forgotten, I am abandoned, who even cares As misery from the heart is always best served In the confines of my poorly lit darkened room I take comfort and in any stranger’s chance visit Even if he has no soul or real substance to him His warmth in a dark room is a radiant energy That will go far to fend off my nightly haunting I care not the meaning of his current attendance Or any sacrifice I might need to make to keep him It is enough for him to play his role and forestall My loneliness of being Stay it is too late, stay it will rain, stay it is too far In the morning’s light I face the cruel knowledge Of my own human frailty Fully realizing my folly in the sheltering of my fears In one so undeserving Squandering my grains of life in a meaningless existence I implore myself to seek in the light what I so badly want A heart who understands my need for a stillness of being A heart capable of stopping the night from ever becoming My loneliness of being L E Barrett From the poetry collection ‘Verses From Beneath Granite Ledges’ to be released as an E-book and paperback book the first week in April 2014.
