LONG DRY SPELL ENDS FOR FUCHS WITH WYOMING COUNTY WIN PERRY, NY…Some drivers win races consecutively…others win once in a while…but for Steve Fuchs, a long dry spell dating back to 1987 was finally broken as he won Friday night’s 30-lap SST Modified feature at Wyoming County International Speedway (WCIS) on NAPA Soccer Night. Cam Ayers took the lead at the start of the SST Modified feature while last week’s winner, John Bookmiller, moved into second place on lap 2. John Barber’s car slowed one lap later to bring out the race’s first caution. Bookmiller moved past Ayers to take the lead at the lap 10 mark, while Fuchs, who had fallen back to fourth, started to work his way back toward the front of the field, moving into second spot at halfway with Kevin Lewis tucked behind him. Bookmiller and Fuchs diced for the lead until Fuchs grabbed the top spot on lap 21, with Lewis following through into second. Fuchs had a gap of a couple of car lengths in hand till the yellow flew on lap 28 when Ed Schueler spun. The restart only allowed for one more lap to be completed, which set up a one lap shootout to the finish. Fuchs held off challenges from Lewis to notch the win, while Bookmiller followed the duo in third. Bob Wilson drove from deep in the pack to take fourth and Dan Hoag rounded out the top five. SST Modified heats were won by Bro Bradshaw and Daniel Majchrzak. The 25-lap Super Stock feature started with Cassie Logsdon leading lap one while Daniel Majchrzak and Austyn Fugle battled hard for the runnerup spot. Majchrzak grabbed the lead on lap 4 as Fugle and Allen Bookmiller diced for position. Fugle grabbed second spot and then motored into the lead on lap 8. Bookmiller moved into the runnerup spot as Majchrzak’s car began to fade and put the heavy pressure on Fugle. Bookmiller had two tries on late restarts to move past Fugle but couldn’t get by, as Fugle scored another victory, adding to his point lead in the division. Bookmiller was second while Mike Chenaille came back from a pit stop to change a flat right front tire to nab third. Ron Richter and Ron Greek rounded out the top five. Super Stock heats were won by Logsdon and Fugle. The 15-lap 4 Cylinder feature event saw Lou Carbone charge into the lead on the opening lap, only to be followed by Eric Hastreiter, who wrestled the lead away after a good battle on lap 9 to lead the rest of the distance. Carbone was second, followed by Andrea Lamanna, Kevin Grom, and Cameron Vargo. Hastreiter won the 4 Cylinder heat race. Fans were also treated to ‘Junkyard Soccer’ to close out the night’s program, as several drivers used cars and minivans to play a game of soccer with a 500-pound soccer ball. The Minivan team beat the Car team by a score of 3 to 1. A group of competitors from the Genesee Valley Kart Club were also present, running a demonstration race with their sprint karts prior to the start of the night’s feature races. Coming up Friday night, August 9th, it’s Hard Hat and Contractor night. The SST Modifieds, Super Stocks, and 4 Cylinders will all be in action. Gates open at 5:00 p.m. and racing starts at 7:30 p.m. WCIS is at 35 Adrian Road in Perry, NY.
