LVEJO is hiring a: Youth Organizer (Part-Time) The Little Village Environmental Justice Organization is a community based non-profit organization based on the southwest side of Chicago. Our mission is to organize with our community to accomplish environmental justice in Little Village and achieve the self-determination of immigrant, low-income, and working-class families. For over twenty years LVEJO has worked on grassroots campaigns that have demonstrated community power and improved the health of the neighborhood. Our organization is proud to have led important community victories to retire the Crawford and Fisk coal power plants, re-establish the 31st street CTA bus route, and build the new La Villita Park. LVEJO is currently searching for candidates who can increase our capacity to develop youth leadership in Little Village. The position is also established to support LVEJO’s EJ2020 plan and environmental justice educational initiatives. Summary of Duties: Implement, manage, and document LVEJO’s youth leadership development program Prepare youth to lead LVEJO’s grassroots campaigns. Promote environmental justice principles that enhance the ability to create social change in Chicago. Build strong relationships with Little Village youth, teachers, counselors, artists, and other youth organizers. Perform strategic research on matters related to urban communities of color. Organize youth-led community meetings related to social and environmental justice in Chicago. Qualifications: High School Diploma preferred but not required Bilingual Spanish/English: able to write/speak in both languages Youth organizing and leadership development experience Excellent verbal communication skills, including public speaking before large audiences and one-on-one mentoring Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities with consistent follow-through Independent and self-motivated, also able to work in teams Comfortable working in diverse settings and facilitating culturally relevant programming Knowledge of the greater Chicago neighborhoods, urban issues, and political advocacy Social media, database, website management, and Microsoft Office skills The ideal candidate can demonstrate a strong commitment to ending environmental racism and advancing environmental justice. The candidate should have a familiarity with current youth-led movements and the history and environmental justice struggle of Little Village.
