LYME DISEASE…to treat with antibiotics or not to treat If previously treated for CHRONIC LYME and no longer symptomatic there may be no point in re-testing or treating since we have no guarantee that we can ever get rid of every last Borrelia burgdorferi [Bb] bacteria anyway. DONATING BLOOD What I worry about however, is people with Lyme [who do not know they have it] donating blood. I am of the opinion that people previously treated for Chronic Lyme disease should not donate blood because I do not trust that every bacterium was actually killed off. DORMANCY If the persons immune system is strong and hardy enough then they may likely just keep the bacteria suppressed and dormant. At least a dormant Bb bacteria is not likely to be floating around in the blood since Borrelia burgdorferi [Bb] is a facultative anaerobe. FACULTATIVE ANAEROBE Facultative anaerobes hate oxygen and prefer to be where there is less oxygen. The blood stream has the most oxygen...therefore the Bb bacteria is not likely to hang out in the blood stream, but is more likely to dive deep down into tissues away from oxygen. This is why Lyme causes symptoms that involve joints, tendons and cartilage...these tissues have the worst blood circulation...this is why Lyme Bb likes to be in and around joints. Borrelia burgdorferi replicates away from oxygen. Definition: A facultative anaerobe is an organism that makes ATP by aerobic respiration if oxygen is present, but is capable of switching to fermentation or anaerobic respiration if oxygen is absent.
