Lack of facilities dejects Valley artists, Annual drama festival exposes academy’s ill functioning =>There is no dearth of actors and artists in Kashmir valley but what mars the talent is the lack of platform and facilities. Despite Kashmir is known for its culture, folk and tradition, the government fails to survive its existence. Not satisfactory to groom the budding artists and to promote prominent ones, Jammu and Kashmir Academy of Art, culture and Languages organizes annual drama festival that too in a Women’s College auditorium due to lack of its own auditorium in the valley. Seven plays have already been staged so far out of the total eight performances comprising the Academy festival this year. Among series of theater drama during the festival, Wahab Dramatic Club, Hajin Sonawari, staged the play “Nyay”( justice), written and directed by Dr. Aziz Hajini, depicted the inner conflict of the human mind while experimenting with symbolic and absurdist approach of theatre. The audience were enthralled and impressed by the message in play, but ironically the non availability of facilities like lighting dishurted the performing artists as the play was stopped midways thrice which exposes the ill functioning of the cultural academy. The director of the play Dr. Aziz Hajini expressed disgust over the role of government and the only government department for the promotion art and culture, the Jammu and Kashmir Cultural academy. He said the artists are dejected due to the non availability of the professional theater. He added that there are not agencies also who can promote the theater. It is being viewed that the government negligence has affected the art field in the valley to a great extent. Other artists who performed in the ‘nyay’ drama also said that the academy sans proper active participation for the groom of young talent even the existing one. Shameema Khushboo, one of the artist added that the government is yet to do efforts for the promotion of Kashmiri language and culture as it lacks acting schools, workshops. Firdouse, one of artist who performed in the play further said that this field can be one of the platforms to contribute in the growing problem of unemployment in the state if given proper attention.
