Last Fridays Perry Chief included a letter to the editor regarding the need for a new shelter in our town. Its surprising how many local people have never been to the shelter, or know where it is located. Here is a glimpse of the facility that is tucked away, out of sight near the sewage treatment plant on the south side of hwy 141, just across from the dog park. There are four kennel runs that open into the building. The last picture is of a make-shift drop off pen where Perry PD leave strays picked up after hours. The building measures approx. 9 foot by 24 foot. Inside there are 8 stainless steel cat cages, a wash sink and storage containers for food and litter; no desk, no restroom, no fridge for meds (no room!). It should be obvious that holding dogs for seven days, arranging adoptions and providing for their day to day needs is indeed challenging if there are more than 3-4 dogs on site at a time. Now consider the lack of safe containment for small dogs - we are forced to hold them in cat cages until foster homes open up. Surely a city considering amenities like soccer fields and camp grounds can do better for its animals. The shelter is in use 24/7, EVERY DAY of the year. The same cannot be said for any other city facility, certainly not balk fields or camp grounds.
