Last Saturday night was interesting. Being a long weekend there - TopicsExpress

Last Saturday night was interesting. Being a long weekend there were lots of people in the city. A police officer told me that there was a rave party with 15000 people in attendance through the evening. There was a brawl at Central Station that could have resulted in very serious injuries. I asked a railway employee if they had called security and he said there were hardly any on duty. (This was at about 11.00pm, a long weekend and very busy.) Took the police about 20 minutes to arrive and the brawlers were long gone. Half an hour later, while having coffee with some of the homeless as we waited for a train, three people started confronting several homeless as they slept in the doorways of shops in Eddy Avenue. One of the homeless jumped up and was going to attack them with a pair of scissors and we were able to diffuse the situation until the police arrived. Again too late to have any chance of catching anyone. On long weekends and special event periods in the city, many more homeless people spend the evenings out of town, on the trains to get away from the increased potential of abuse and assault. We went to Kiama and there were many more homeless on board than usual, so a good chance to chat and meet new people.
