Last month, the Wall Street Journal revealed statistical evidence of what mainstream-radio listeners have long suspected: Yes, you did just hear that Lorde single again. In the face of the internet’s infinite jukebox, pop-radio stations have responded by playing fewer songs a lot more often. For a snapshot of how this narrowcasting approach is playing out locally, we surveyed 12 commercial FM-radio stations in the Greater Toronto Area over a 12-hour programming block last week, to determine the musical diversity (or lack thereof) on the city’s airwaves.
