Last night I, along with the two Democratic candidates, - TopicsExpress

Last night I, along with the two Democratic candidates, participated in the first debate of this campaign season at the Jewish Community Center (JCC). My Republican opponent chose not to participate in this debate, sponsored by the Food Bank for New York City, the JCC, and DNAinfo. While I understood going into it that I might not be the most popular person in the room because I would be espousing conservative principles to tackle hunger issues I, nevertheless, believe I owe it to the people I want to represent in the City Council to participate in such debates. Apparently my opponent feels differently and was noticeably absent. This failure to attend such a debate is disturbing when we consider that Republicans make up a super-minority of the City Council, which means that Republicans must often publicly and unapologetically take positions that are unpopular in City Hall. We need a City Council Member who will at least be there to debate the issues and fight for what they believe. I was disappointed that my Republican opponent was not present to talk about the myriad of issues that were discussed, including traffic, economic development. To date, ideas and substance have been absent from that campaign. Last night, my opponent herself was absent.
