Last night in our final lecture in our 6 week immersion course we talked about the environmental impacts an animal based diet can have. We discussed this issue of dumping more fertilizers onto our soil and factory farms that take what could be valuable fertilizer and dump it into our ground water. This is the result. Dead zones, areas in bodies of water (in this case the gulf of Mexico) where no life can be sustained due to these algae blooms caused by excessive nitrogen. Organic farming does not use fertilizers and would help decrease this issue greatly (also protective against draught). Also taking cattle out of factory farms and back onto pastures would also help. Write to the president and ask him to end subsidies to meat and dairy. If the true cost (to our health and the planet) was reflected people would make better choices based on price. Better for us, better for our world. futurity.org/mississippi-river-nitrates/
