Last week, I was out West on vacation. At a gas station in Jacob Lake, AZ I found hundreds of these Pandora Pinemoths (Coloradia pandora) lying around. Most were dead, having drowned in puddles, stepped on by people, etc. Many were clinging to walls. I found more in Kanab, UT the same day, also at a gas station. All in all, I estimate that there were about 300 at the gas station in AZ and maybe 25 in UT. I dont know much about the species, but is it normal for them to swarm in large numbers like that in the daytime? Is it just coincidence that I saw them at gas stations? Can anybody tell me anything more about them? They sure are gorgeous.
