Laura Smith asked, My son is 4 and just started public pre-k in September. I never dreamed in a million years wed have issues right off the bat, in preschool. At the end of the first week his teacher told me he was behind. He didnt know the entire alphabet, uppercase and lowercase. Apparently he was supposed to already know some of these things. I noticed his enthusiasm slowed. He loved going to school to see friends and play, but every time I picked him up he was angry and upset. He began biting his nails all the time. After many small talks with his teacher about her concerns I started to see the big picture. There is NOTHING wrong with my son. He WAS happy and healthy until I mistakenly threw him to the wolves who made him feel like he wasnt smart or as good as the other kids. They actually brought in a tutor for him but she tutored him in a corner of the classroom. So while all the other kids played and had fun he was forced to do worksheets in front of everyone. The day his teacher told me that he broke down and cried when she put him on the spot in class to answer a question, I had had enough! I asked her to gather his artwork, etc., and told her he would not be back. She actually told me I should take him to a professional to be evaluated. Preschool should not cause that much stress and anxiety in children! Good grief! So I pulled him out to homeschool him. Im completely new to homescholing and did not plan on this, but now I am so glad I did!! His anxiety level and behavior have definitely improved and he loves that Mommy is his teacher now. And thank God I have my husbands full support. My big question is, how to de-school him? He was only in preschool for 8 weeks, but developed a poor self esteem while there. When he struggles with something Im teaching him, he is quick to tell me hes not smart or hes never going to learn or hell just hang his head and start to cry. I just keep praising him and doing my best to build him up. Its been almost 4 weeks now of homeschool, and I feel like Im getting nowhere trying to undo what the school did to my sweet boy and his self-confidence. Id appreciate any tips, advice, or if anyone knows a good resource for me on this issue, that would be great. Thank you!
