Leeds Mayor David Miller says the owners of approximately 30 cars - TopicsExpress

Leeds Mayor David Miller says the owners of approximately 30 cars towed to a wrecker lot Tuesday night will be reimbursed by the state. The city requested the cars be towed from surface streets to clear a passage to carry hundreds of people stranded on I-20 to shelters. Miller said earlier today the city could not pay for the cost of the towing because of a law that prevents public funds from benefiting private citizens. Miller said tonight he spoke with Gov. Robert Bentleys office and the state emergency management agency about the situation. Because the cars were towed from a state highway -- U.S. 78 -- the state could, however, pay for it. We have secured a method to reimburse any cost they might incur, Miller said. Miller also said the state EMA is sending trucks to tow vehicles left on I-20. Those vehicles, he said, will be moved to the side of the road. blog.al/spotnews/2014/01/leeds_mayor_says_state_will_re.html
