Left us on this day (Dec. 20) in 1973: pop singer & actor Bobby Darin (heart failure following open heart surgery, age 37); he was of the Frank Sinatra mold in that he could interpret songs no matter what the genre & also hold his own as an actor; he scored numerous charting hits from the mid-50s on, including Splish Splash, Dream Lover, Beyond The Sea, If I Was A Carpenter & Mack The Knife - which sold over a million copies & earned him Grammies for Record of the Year & Best New Artist in 1960; as an actor, he is best remembered for his Academy Award Nominated supporting role in 1963′s Captain Newman, MD; he continued to record & act through the ’60s (he became more folksy as the decade progressed & he became more politically active), but poor health he had suffered from since a child began to take its toll by the ’70s; Bobby was inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame in 1990 & into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1998; he was recognized with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010…
