Left us on this day (Nov. 4) in 1994: Fred Sonic Smith (heart failure), best remembered as a founding guitarist for Detroit proto-punk band, MC5; formed in 1964, they were one of the architects of garage rock & a direct influence on punk rock; their Kick Out The Jams remains one of rocks truest anthems to this day; after MC5 disbanded in 1972, Fred formed Sonic’s Rendezvous Band, which included Scott Asheton of The Stooges; in 1976, he met punk poetess Patti Smith while she & her band were in Detroit; they hit it off & eventually became romantically involved, marrying in 1980 & settling into family life in the suburbs of Detroit until Freds passing; Fred served as inspiration for Patti, who wrote to him, among other tributes, the song Frederick; cornerstone alt-rock band Sonic Youth took its name from Freds nickname; Rolling Stone ranked Fred #93 in its list of The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time…
