Let me give a voice to my ACTIVE duty brothers and sisters who remain VOICELESS. I will translate for you this article in very common sense terms. If you ask a General/Admiral for a military assessment the General/Admiral will give you and their service members a 100% MILITARY assessment. The top brass will ask their staffs to look at the situation at hand (the proposed and approved budget and assess the impacts it has with respect to their area they are in charge of – Land, Sea or Air) Keep in mind; they will ONLY look at their specific Department’s budget… for example Department of the Army under the Department of Defense, will look at the Dept of the Army and the impacts, The Department of the Navy will do the same as will the Airforce. The military will NOT look at other U.S. Department’s budgets and conduct analysis on them (it is not their job to do so!); such as Health and Human Services, Justice, Labor, Energy, Education, Transportation and so on. Bottom line, the military will give you a military assessment. Now, ask yourself a simple question… do you really think the other departments are more or less important than our national security? In this article the active duty Generals/Admirals think making retirees who have already meet their obligations and commitment of service to our Nation should have to pay more for health care even though, in the civilian world this would be considered a breach of contract and against the law. So after already served and guaranteed benefits you want to remove some of the benefits because it doesn’t fit into your “budget”? Hmmmm this isn’t a military issue, this is a congressional issue. If the Generals/Admirals assessment is that without additional budget our Active duty troop readiness, training ans ability to protect our National Security is at risk… shouldn’t we take that seriously and look at other ways to find a solution other then on the BACKs of those who have already given so much? This article makes me sick. Of course the Active duty will say “I understand Sir or Ma’am” and drive on… a service member never quits, never surrenders and always places the mission first! We have always done with less and have always been ask to do so much with so little. However, this retiree has had enough of sitting VOICELESS while on Active duty … all while our leaders in Washington try to use us like pawns approving hundreds of thousands, millions worth of pet projects and wasting BILLIONS of tax payers’ dollars on things (including Defense projects that have nothing to do with training, pay, benefits or readiness); I am sure you can name many. If people are our Nations greatest asset then why don’t our leaders start acting like it? However, it seems they are more interested in things and not taking care of people.
