Lets pick apart some of the misguided information which News articles are disseminating: Supporters also say that horse slaughtering facilities in the U.S. will provide a humane alternative for aging, starving or abandoned horses by owners who can no longer afford to take care of them. No. Though this may sound good in theory, this is not a cure-all solution to the overbreeding/over populated/neglect problems in the horse world. What would happen if we rewarded animal hoarders/breeders/owners by disposing of their sick, old, injured animals by PAYING them for it and thus allowing them to purchase new animals to continue the cycle with? Where are the consequences to their abuse, neglect and inability to conceive responsibility? Nowhere. Why would anyone care about how many animals they are breeding or starving if they could simply sell them to slaughter and start over? Therefore, the horse population would SKYROCKET due to irresponsible people taking advantage of the system. And then, what happens when we run out of buyers to purchase the tainted meat of the excessive horses being bred and sent to slaughter? Which leads into the next topic: Supporters also take issue with the taboo of eating horsemeat and say the animal is consumed in countries all over the world and could be extremely profitable to American companies interested in the industry. They also argue that horses should be treated no differently than pigs, chickens and cows. Horses ARE NOT consumed in this country because they are given medications, wormers, etc which the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) does NOT allow in the human food supply because of their dangerous and toxic affects on human health. Why does that make it okay to sell our toxic meat to other countries simply because they are ignorant to the contents of it? It isnt. And it isnt okay to start eating our domestic horses in the United States simply because its another food source - because the meat is not safe to eat. The FDA does not even allow horse meat to be used in DOG food, because of the dangerous aspects of it. Thats it. Final. It makes no sense to do. Its reckless and dangerous to slaughter horses for human consumption.
