Letter sent to Councillor John Pollard, Leader of Cornwall Council: AN KESUNYANS KELTEK - SCOREN GERNEWEK The Cornish Branch of the Celtic League (The Celtic League has Roster Consultative Status at the United Nations) Councillor John Pollard Leader - Cornwall Council The Exchange 4th Floor New County Hall Truro TR1 3AY 11th September, 2014 Dear Councillor Pollard The Hope Project, St Agnes - Mr Samuel Farmer We have been in communication with Mr Samuel Farmer of the ‘Hope Project Cornwall’, a Community Interest Company (C.I.C.) the aim of which is to engage young people in cultural and adventure training. Mr. Farmer not only has substantial contacts and influence in the Black Asian Minority & Ethnic (B.A.M.E.) Community but a thorough and growing understanding of the Cornish National Minority. You will be aware that during 2012 Mr Farmer was subject to shocking racist abuse. Perhaps surprisingly, Mr Farmer informs us that some abuse came from persons identifying as English which was aimed towards Cornish youngsters from Redruth, Camborne and Hayle and his facility at St Agnes was burned down twice. This matter was investigated by the police and treated as racially aggravated crime. This was widely reported in the press and the news even made the international media. He has now started a pro active campaign entitled ‘Thank you Cornwall’ and through his networking and many connections, news of this venture is spreading. It is our belief that Mr Farmer and his partner are in a perfect position to offer a unique service to Cornish youngsters and to those who make Cornwall their home in a meaningful, constructive and far reaching way and which will undoubtedly project Cornwall in a very positive light. Having been given to understand that he has been in conversation with you regarding various issues and that he speaks of you highly, we seek to meet with you and any other relevant Councillors and Officers of Cornwall Council with the aim of putting this matter right and to hear more os his plans to put Cornwall in the forefront of positive interaction between minority groups. Mr Farmer has explained his frustrations with inert racial services which only appear to seek to bolster their own position on committees and which fail to represent the whole of Cornwall and its inhabitants. In particular he referred to the recent Truro Carnival debacle. We support his view that more understanding and interaction between groupings would avoid misinterpretation of others cultures, heritage, history and languages. Mr Farmer feels there is a need for people from the ethnic minorities to be integrating and sharing with Cornish community and its heritage. We feel his work thus far has help lay foundations which will help Cornwall shake off past misunderstandings and to move forward embracing all that our culture has to offer. Thank you for your kind attentions and we look forward to hearing back from you to this end. Yours sincerely Branch Convener Cornwall Branch of the Celtic League
