Let’s just take a look at life peer Baroness Warsi, Thatcherite Tory, supporter of the American Republican Party, heavily involved in Islamic international banking, and distributer of homophobic election literature in 2005. Although she represents an official face of Islam in the British government, her relationship with the British Muslim community has been, shall we say a little stormy at times – such as the time she was pelted with eggs by Muslims over the deaths of Muslims in Afghanistan. Furthermore a radical preacher warned that Muslim protestors might commit acts of violence against her in reprisal for her support of the British Army in some Muslim countries. She looks somewhat angelic on the News having resigned over the government’s position on Gaza, and there’s no doubt that she’s done the right thing. (In fact the whole government should resign.) But I can’t help thinking that this is an opportunity well taken to make her position in the British Muslim community more tenable. Given her ambiguous position vis-à-vis that community one wonders how she would have fared had she not resigned. Resignation may be have the right thing to do, and is certainly a good gesture for the cause of peace, but it also looks like a very smart political move on her part.
