Let’s talk a little more about animal collisions on the highway. - TopicsExpress

Let’s talk a little more about animal collisions on the highway. If you do hit an animal and it is still in the roadway, first pull on to the shoulder and make sure you are ok and that your vehicle is still drivable. If you are injured or your vehicle is not drivable, call 911. If the vehicle is drivable and you are ok, park your vehicle behind the animal and turn on your hazard lights to warn other drivers. Call the local RCMP detachment and report the injured or deceased animal. Do not approach or touch the animal. An injured animal may still kick or bite in order to defend itself. If the animal is not in the roadway or has left the area, it’s still important to let the RCMP know so they can take appropriate steps. This may involve letting a conservation officer know or letting the highway crew for the area know. An important pre-emptive measure is to make sure your lights, signals and brakes are properly maintained and checked over before hitting the road. Drive safe!
