Libertarians (I use the words libertarian and anarchy as synonyms) are accused of being naive and not understanding human nature. We are painted as people who are against the government because we think people are good and that violence isnt ever needed. We are accused of not understanding that there are bad people out there and without a government the weak are vulnerable. Its just one strong gang oppressing a weaker gang. Getting rid of the state might break up the monopoly of violence but it wont reduce the violence. It will just replace the monopoly of the state with private gangs. This criticism is invalid. Libertarians understand human nature. We are aware that there are people who are violent. We are aware that not everyone can be reasoned with and that if we just ask nicely everything will be ok. We understand that persuasion doesnt work on thugs. I am not so stupid as to think that I can convince someone who wants to murder me. But what anarchists are saying is that the state isnt the solution. The state is an irrational answer to a rational question. Its because there are people that are blindly obedient, controlling, and wanting to steal from others that a government is very dangerous. If a person is moral and follows his conscience the law is irrelevant. Good people dont need to be threatened to do the right thing; thats what makes them good in the first place. But the law isnt needed to ensure that wicked people do the right thing. If the only way certain people can do what you want is by threatening them these people are very dangerous since these people can be easily manipulated to do harm. People who need laws are the devils plaything. If the law is needed to force bad people to submit to the boot of authority in order to do good this means they are capable of doing whatever authority orders them to do if told to. If a law is powerful enough to stop a murderer from killing you then the law is powerful enough to convince a person to murder you. If a cop is willing to forgo his own individual judgement and simply enforce the law, people may be safe if the law is limited to victim laws only but is dangerous when the law tells a cop to commit aggression. Anarchists understand that many people will blindly do what they are told. We understand that people are deceitful and power-hungry but we also understand that a government is made of people and that if people are bad they dont suddenly become good is they are called politicians and cops and judges instead of criminals. We understand that words are just a way to describe things and dont change the elements of that thing. We understand that wearing different clothes doesnt make violence ok and peaceful. We understand that the government is a haven for criminals and is only a legal shield to be able to do evil with impunity by painting is as the law. -DR
