Like most of the nation, I was stunned over the news of Robin Williams. Posting my favorite RW movie was his portrayal of the real life Patch Adams, I particularly enjoyed his speech to the “school council”, who was bringing him up on charges for treating patients before he was licensed. When asked whether he had considered some patients could have died, Patch asks, “What’s wrong with death, sir? Whats wrong with treating death with humanity and dignity and decency, and God forbid, a little humor…? You treat a disease you win or lose, but if you treat a person you will win every time.” I am no doctor, but with my calling I deal with the spiritual nature of life constantly, and death on a regular basis. Sitting with a family watching over a dying loved one can sometimes feel awkward. Ive heard it described as feeling like an angel of comfort or a buzzard in wait. Many times Ive been in that situation. One of those times several years ago, a family member made a comment and something off-the-wall popped into my head and out of my mouth, catching even me off guard. (Some of you know me :) One of the family members looked at me like, did you really say that. Then, as though the bulb flashed on, their expression turned to question, is it ok to laugh, and then they did. Their laughter brightened the whole room and even the one lying in the bed came up with a weak smile. Of course that can’t be done with every situation, but with a family raised in faith, humor is something God gave, I believe, to remember our joy. Theres humor in scripture for sure, and what a joy it brings to a sad situation. Robin Williams life and death teaches us a couple of things. 1. Please Dont Give Up! Talk to someone if you Ever feel there is no hope. There is Always Hope! Thats Gods Promise at the end of 1 Corinthians 13. 2. Lets not take ourselves so serious that we lose heart for those who need us most. Pay attention, say a prayer for guidance and step in if you feel someone is in danger. Just remember, its not about being a hero, its about God doing His Work through you, in hopes we dont miss it when ... She is running A hundred miles an hour in the wrong direction She is trying but the canyons ever widening In the depths of her cold heart So she sets out on another misadventure just to find Shes another two years older And shes three more steps behind She is yearning for shelter and affection That she never found at home She is searching for a hero to ride in To ride in and save the day And in walks her prince charming And he knows just what to say Momentary lapse of reason And she gives herself away If judgment looms under every steeple If lofty glances from lofty people Cant see past her scarlet letter And weve never even met her Does anybody hear her? Does anybody see? Does anybody even know shes going down today? Under the shadow of our steeple With all the lost and lonely people Searching for the hope thats tucked away in you and me Does anybody hear her? Does anybody see? He is running a hundred miles an hour In the wrong direction ... DOES ANYBODY HEAR HER – Casting Crowns youtube/watch?v=OEhRucEVzH8
