He organised tremendous weather, he set the golf course up firm but testing and a great weekend was had by all. Players turned out in great numbers to support his special weekend with many tales of joy and woe been rehashed over and over again as many talked about what might have been. Winning a Captain’s prize is never an easy task and this year proved once again how difficult it can be. Play commenced on Friday morning as the first group went out to take on the course. With firm bounces galore and tricky pin positions people were finding the going difficult especially in the searing heat. Playing to ones handicap was going to be a challenge that many failed to do so any score around the 69 mark was going to be well in the hunt. After 2 days of qualifying only 8 players managed to hit 69 or better which indicated a real US Open type test of golf. The leaders in the clubhouse were Philip Walton (19) and P J Coughlan (12) with two excellent scores of 65, sparkling golf indeed. Frank Corcoran (16) and Jim Cashman (21) were the next best with fine 68’s whilst Paudie Prendergast (14), Martin Power (12) Michael Keane (18) and Charlie O’Sullivan (19) all had 69’s. It was not too many years ago that people failed to qualify with a 69 and this year they were in the last three 3 balls!! The big question remained, was the winner going to come from these eight men or would some one come with a scorching run on Sunday and steal the limelight? Once again Sunday proved to be scorcher weather wise and although the scoring on the course was better the course won out as no one was able to take the course apart. Of the early starters Marty Power and Paddy O’Leary were going well after nine trying to make a run at the leaders, other lads were going steady, whilst others were just happy to take a breather in the shade. After 9 holes completed it seemed that it was still anyone’s to win as no one was striding away from the field. In the end it all boiled down to the last few groups on the course, was it going to be Martin, Paudie, Jim, P J, or Frank to take the top honours. In the end Frank Corcoran claimed his second Captain’s prize in his long illustrious career by the narrowest of margins from playing partner P J Coughlan on the final green. Having claimed his first Captain’s prize in 2003, even Frank would have been surprised that 10 years on he would be back to the top table claiming the top honours once again, a massive achievement for anyone but considering his age it was a phenomenal performance and a richly deserved victory. 2012 Captain Seamus Beecher (16) claimed the veterans prize with a 142 total, Past Captains prize went to Tom O’Donovan (19) with 141, the categories were won by Paddy O’Leary (10) with 141, Paul Quinn (15) with 142 and Philip Walton (19) with a fine 139. Free swinging Martin Power (12) took 5th place with 138; Jim Cashman was 4th with 137 with 3rd going to Paudie Prendergast (14) also with 137. The gross went to Martin Shanahan (11) with 160 gross who cycled a mere 112 miles in the ring of Kerry charity cycle between rounds!! Second went to Lismore’s P J Coughlan (12) with 136 and the aforementioned Frank Corcoran (16) 1st with 135. Another super achievement happened on Sunday when Marty McNamara recorded his first ever hole in one at the 13th hole. It certainly was not an unlucky number for Marty as his sweetly struck rescue club found the bottom of the cup, a moment to savour and a very rare feat!! Our Captain John is a very hard working and diligent member of our committee and we are delighted that his weekend worked out so well. All the players all weekend were very complimentary of the course and the glorious sunshine was also a big boost to us all. John thanked all the people who participated in any way to his weekend and praised everyone involved in making sure the weekend went smoothly. He had special praise for Marie and his family, for Bernie, Miriam, Ann, Alice, Katherine and all the competitions committee and had a special mention for Tony and his crew for having the course in tip top shape. He finished by wishing Ger Ahern and the Bruen panel all our best wishes for next weekend in their quest for Munster glory. Jimmy Bruen Munster Finals Weekend 14th July in Bandon G.C. The eagerly awaited Munster Finals on Sunday July 14th are almost here. Lismore will go to battle with Shannon off the first tee at 8 am with the other semi final between Cork and Killorglin starting off the 10th also at 8am. We wish Ger and his panel of players all the best for next Sunday and your support on the day would be greatly appreciated. Junior Golf It is that time of year again boys and girls as Junior golf will begin next Tuesday the 16th of July, sign in at 10 am. Also lessons for those who have enlisted will commence shortly. Interestingly 3 of our junior golfers will have the great accolade of representing Waterford next Sunday in Limerick in the Munster Minor hurling final where they face Limerick. We would to like to wish Stephen Bennett, Colm Roche, Shane Bennett and all their family and friends all the very best in their quest for Munster glory. Interestingly as they seek Munster glory in Limerick, their Uncles James Bennett and Frank Roche will be in Bandon seeking Munster glory in the Bruen so suffice to say there is split loyalties as to which venue family members will be on Sunday.
