Listening to our new PM I got the feeling that an old and defining strategy of Icelanders continues. Our ancestors fled from difficulties in Norway and in the British islands. Now, it seems that in difficulties due to incompetence we are again heading further north (northern? Norway and Finland) and west (Greenland) looking to Nook, Oslo and Helsinki avoiding Paris, Berlin and London -- Icelandic farmers and fishermen leading the way. But with international travelling and mass media as well as the internet revolution there are not really any more islands or isolation to flee to. So possibly we should try to become competent and the first step may be to break out of the horrible isolation of a ridiculously isolated tiny maternal language used by nobody outside our island, only 300 thousand individuals in a world soon to count nine thousand million! We do not have to drop Icelandic, just add another such as English, in reality the international language. Contrary to stubborn false myths about language skills, the majority of Icelanders is unable to access any otherwise easily available information from any foreign media and on the internet. Our low level of education (again contrary to false myths) is thus grotesquely amplified. -- Is flight then again the only solution? Are we again about to flee even farther from the main areas of human habitation due to incompetence and thus the inability to compete and collaborate with advanced humans. Go north young man, but what to do at the North Pole?
