Little Elm Library embarks on pre-Kindergarten focus Programs aim to give young children a head start on school LITTLE ELM, TX- Based on the widely-accepted fact that children begin their early learning exclusively through oral stimulation, the Little Elm Library has implemented the “1KBK” program, says Youth Librarian Kelli Phelan. The 1KBK program stands for one thousand books before Kindergarten,” she said. “We know that for the first few years of school children learn exclusively through the spoken word. They hear concepts and begin to associate words and letters with what they hear. We’ve developed this program to get them accustomed to hearing words that are read from a book.” The 1KBK program encourages parents and caregivers of pre-K children to read at least 1,000 books to their children before Kindergarten and is offering incentives for completing the task. Stamps for each 25 books read will be distributed, and an attractive certificate will be presented to those who reach 1,000 books. The program targets children who have not yet entered Kindergarten. “Because children learn everything orally for the first few years, we want to expose them to as many books as possible,” she added. “That way, they learn more words; and the greater their understanding of language, the better they will be prepared for school.” Books read at library reading programs will also count toward the 1,000-book goal. These titles will be posted on the Little Elm Librarys Facebook page. Parents and caregivers of children participating in the library reading programs are encouraged to add these to their individual reading logs. Meshing perfectly with the 1KBK program is the newly-instituted Lapsit Storytime. This program is presented every Tuesday in October at 10:15 a.m. in the Library, and includes books read to children from infancy to 18 months. The program is funded by a grant from the Ladd and Katherine Hancher Library Foundation. During Lapsit Storytime, board books, songs and rhymes are read and shared. Children and their caregivers are encouraged to stay after the Storytime to socialize and play with developmentally appropriate toys.
