Liza Long wrote a December 15, 2012 blog article titled: I am Adam Lanzas Mother. Its time to talk about mental illness. Eight months later, Liza and her son Michael visited NPR StoryCorps in Boise, Idaho, to have a conversation about her article. Michael said: When I get that angry, I dont exactly know what I feel. My heart definitely is beating faster. Like, Ill be having a really great day and all of a [sudden] my body will decide, Hey, guess what? Im going to ruin your perfect day for you. It almost feels like theres some extraterrestrial being taking control of me and making me do all these crazy things, Michael continues. I feel powerful, like I have control, and yet I dont. The thing is, Michael says, people cant actually understand what mental illness is if they dont either have a mental illness or have lived and been with someone who does.
