Local teens in running for scholarship program Five Edison students and one from Metuchen have been named semifinalists in the 2014 National Achievement Scholarship Program, chosen from among more than 1,600 African-American high school seniors. The winners — Ikenna N. Ugboaja of Edison High School; Whitney Wantong of J.P. Stevens High School, Edison; Shafeeq and Shareef Ibraheem of Wardlaw-Hartridge School, Edison; and Mark-Avery Tamakloe of St. Joseph High School, Metuchen — were announced Sept. 25 by National Merit Scholarship Corp. officials. These teens now have the opportunity to continue in the competition for approximately 800 awards worth about $2.5 million that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a National Achievement Scholarship, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the final level of the competition. About 80 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Achievement Scholarship. Finalists will be notified in January. All awardees will be selected from the finalist group on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Scholarship winners will be announced in April.
