Look, no one needs to look much further than my family to understand why I am extraordinarily uncomfortable with police, its militarization, and their involvement in sorting out interpersonal disputes. But the solutions offered in this article just made me very uncomfortable. It is clear, at least for me, to understand why the state has a responsibility to prevent interpersonal violence; the responsibility that friends or strangers have for similar mitigation seems, to me, a lot more unclear. And while the Halifax solution is ideal, could that really be replicated in, say, Atlanta or Birmingham, where state involvement in starting new enterprises is largely limited to multinationals? Im still chewing on this, though.
