Look out! Rant below. Lets get this out there, because Im already seeing it: The World Cup is a Big Deal Sporting Event, and some people are posting about it, and other people immediately get their defensive I dont care oh god more sports ball statuses up. Hey, I get it. If you dont like soccer, or just dont like sports, having your Facebook feed suddenly taken over by a mess of sports-related activity must feel frustrating. So you make fun of it, because poking something that bothers you in the eye is a natural thing to do. Please reconsider. You have things that you like. You have friends who like things that you like. And you have friends who like a range of things beyond the things you like. All those people posting sportsy statuses? Theyre your friends, or at least people you felt you knew to a point where you didnt want to turn down their friend request on a social networking site. When you reflexively kick at something that big groups of your friends are passionate about, youre kind of calling your friends stupid. And maybe youd do that over a beer or in a jesting fashion, but saying that everyone who cares about something is stupid simply because *you* dont care about it comes across as small and somewhat petulant. So maybe you wish you didnt have to hear your friends talk about this thing that you think is stupid but they seem to be passionate about. Guess what? You have something youre passionate about that lots of other people think is stupid too. You probably wouldnt want your friends rolling their eyes at your passions and calling them stupid. You care deeply about theater, or CrossFit, or Joss Whedon projects, or salsa dancing, or improv, or home-brewing, or whittling, or reading YA novels, or marathons, or yoga, or fashion, or 90s rap, or Louie, or... something. If your Facebook feed lit up with people telling you how much they wish whittling would just stop already, itd sap some of the fun from what is, basically, a happy way to pass the time. People caring about things is what makes people interesting. Enjoy your friends passion. Be happy that theyre happy. And if you want to get all snide about it behind their backs... go for it. Crack that joke with your friends. Just dont roll with the passive-aggressive Im proud I dont know or care about this stuff. Because its ok not to know about things, but choosing to find out about them is usually a lot more interesting than taking pride in your disinterest. And its ok not to like things, but liking things is much more fun. Enjoy the soccer! ...or just try to ignore the posts by the people who do and take it with a little good humor. Thanks!
