Looking for advice: I have a female client in her 60s, who has had low back issues for a long time. For the past 8 years she would not allow me to touch her low back. Finally, she had low back surgery for a severe stenosis and the surgeons placed a rod in her spine.. a year after the surgery, she still complains of pain and her doctor advised her that massage, yoga and Physical Therapy would help her and would not harm her low back after the surgery. She has had 12 PT sessions and is working with a yoga person for stretches and strengthening exercises and she is allowing me to massage her lumbar area in her full body massage. Between the 3 of us, she has more mobility but still experiences pain while bending forward and also, after much massage warm up to the area, I attempt to go deeper using gentle stripping techniques and cross fiber work that is a low to semi-moderate pressure, she says her back hurts so much later, that she doesnt want me to work deeply at all anymore. Does anyone have any thoughts as to why she might be having so much pain after her massages? Her PT does not know, and her doctor tells her to keep getting massage, etc. I actually dont know what to do for her low back pain now. She sees me once a week for massage originally, to reduce the symptoms of neuropathy in her feet due to her multiple sclerosis, and in that, we are successful.
