Luisa DAmato From The Record covered the Sisters In Spirit vigil. Its a good article summing up some of what was experienced there. She interviewed me about why I was there, and quoted me about some of my experience with the education system for remote indigenous communities: Cameron Dearlove isnt aboriginal. He attended the vigil in part because hes frustrated with the way aboriginal people are treated. In 2003, as a student teacher, he briefly taught high school in Attawapiskat, a reserve on James Bay. Elementary students there were in portable classrooms because their school was closed after it was found to be on contaminated soil. A new school was being built, but didnt open for 14 years. That would never be tolerated in Waterloo Region, Dearlove said. Its difficult to advocate from a remote community. therecord/opinion-story/4898578-d-amato-vigil-for-aboriginal-women-is-filled-with-pain-and-hope/
