Ideology, a developed socio-political framework for the advancement of the group and common values and belief systems. If your group can demonstrate all of these attributes and more then you can happily call yourselves an advanced culture. The Neolithic revolution of around 9,000 BCE saw the beginnings of state formation and an organised elite. Moving along to 3,500 BCE and out of the dust of desert and mountains emerged one of the first independent advanced cultures to come out of Mesopotamia – The Sumerians. The first cities, amazing advances in agriculture, construction and craftsmanship. Oh, and sacrifices. Those sacrifices. Each city was built around the shrine of a God and in many cases their Kings became the embodiment of those they worshipped. Archaeologists have found tombs at the Royal cemetery in Ur which when excavated revealed the burial of the God or Ruler at the lowest level. Consecutive levels leading down to the Royal tomb were stratified by the remains of followers, servants, and attendants. Sometimes up to eighty remains at a time. This would be done over protracted period of time after the initial burial, sacrificing more people as the tomb was built around them. The final piece of the puzzle? The cherry on the cake? The Queen. If it wasnt bad enough that your spouse had just died you knew that when the tomb was full of mangled and bloody corpses it would be your turn to become the grisly and very dead crowning glory. gallery.sjsu.edu/sacrifice/sumerians.html history-world.org/sumerian_gods_and_goddesses.htm
